This event is observed annually on the second Wednesday in March, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day celebrates the contributions of these medical professionals.

Who is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist?

Registered Dietitian Nutritionists are experts in food and nutrition whose training qualifies them to support a variety of patient needs. RDNs can work in a hospital, school, long-term care facility or sports facility. They provide patient care that may include meal planning, nutritional counselling, assessments, track progress, and more. Although, outside their core patient care, RDNs also promote wellness in public forums as well.

As dedicated professionals, RDNs put patient care first and continue their education throughout their careers. Their commitment helps patients’ to meet their health goals or understand their disease better.

Now, It is the role of Dietitians to not only help on an individual level but on a community and national level as well. Nutrition is a science that can be difficult to understand. However, Registered Dietitian can break the science down into language that makes sense and helps hospitals, schools, community centres, nursing homes and more to plan proper meals for those that they serve. Today is set aside to acknowledge their work, but also to bring awareness to their messages.

According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the following key messages are the foundation for communications regarding Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day which are developed for various audiences including health professionals, employers of RDNs, media and the public.

  • Registered Dietitian Nutritionists are the food and nutrition experts who can translate the science of nutrition into practical solutions for healthy living.
  • They possess degrees in nutrition, dietetics, public health or a related field from well-respected, accredited colleges and universities, completed an internship, passed an examination and maintain continuing education.
  • Use their nutrition expertise to help individuals make personalized, positive lifestyle changes.
  • Work throughout the community in hospitals, schools, public health clinics, nursing homes, fitness centres, food management, food industry, universities, research private practice and more.
  • They are advocates for advancing the nutritional status of Americans and people around the world.

Today, we encourage you to;

– Thank an RDN who helped you reach a health goal.
– Learn more about the role of an RDN.
– If you’re an RDN, volunteer to speak at a job fair and share your experiences.
– Give your RDN a shout out on social media!
– Follow your RDN’s guidelines for a healthier you and if you don’t have one, we can connect you!
