Dividing organic produce by colour is a far more scientific method than it first appears. What people have found is that there are a lot of common factors when it comes to fruits and vegetables of a common colour. From the vitamins and phytonutrients they contain to illnesses they prevent, foods of the same colour have a lot more similarities than you think.

The above are the groups, split according to the colour of vegetables and fruits.

  • Red
  • Orange and Yellow
  • Green
  • White
  • Purple and Blue

Red indicates the presence of large amounts of lycopene, anthocyanins and hydroxybenzoic acid to name a few. It protects you against carcinogenic substances in your body and promotes gastrointestinal health in general.

Fruits and vegetables that are Orange and Yellow together have a lot of common properties including healthy quantities of alpha and beta-carotene with beneficial flavonols. These colours accelerate your immune system and increase production of collagen, improving your skin.

Easily one of the biggest groups in the lineup, Green coloured fruits and veggies have copious amounts of non-heme iron, vitamins A and C along with beneficial flavonoids and coumestans. It improves liver functioning and accelerates healing from external injuries.

The White group has 2 of the most consumed fruits in the world, apples and bananas, in their repertoire. Foods from this group contain important vitamins like B6 and D. Their beneficial properties include reduced risk of colon, breast and prostate cancers along with decreased levels of LDL cholesterol.

The food in the Purple and Blue category is the largest source of Anthocyanin which reduces heart disease by over 34%. It has good amounts of vitamins A, B2 and C which can help your body fight against inflammations and respiratory ailments. This supplement is also very effective at this.

As you can see, their components and their benefits are considerably different from each other, but they do have a common goal – improve the general functioning of the body along with preventing deadly diseases from affecting us.
