When you’re trying to eat healthily, chances are that you focus mostly on your meals. You sit down every evening and look with satisfaction at your plate full of lean proteins and leafy greens. And think fondly of the quinoa salad you made yourself for lunch that day. And then you look on the scales and realise that you definitely haven’t lost as much weight as you wanted to. Your mid-morning snack might be the culprit.

What is Your Mid-Morning Snack Today?

The main reason that people find themselves unable to lose weight is often their snacking habits. We’ve all had that mid-morning lull at work where we reach for the nearest sugar hit to get us through the morning until lunch. Here are some handy tips to help you get through that lull without resorting to the office vending machine…

Eat a Better Breakfast

If you get hungry early for a mid-morning snack, you probably aren’t eating enough for breakfast. Make sure that you add something to your morning meal – if you eat a bowl of oatmeal, add a handful of berries and chia seeds, and if you eat peanut butter on toast then why not add some banana slices for extra flavour and energy and to make sure that you don’t end up getting hungry? If you have extra time in the mornings then you could consider making yourself a meal like poached eggs on avocado toast. They’re easy to make, healthy, and will fill you up for hours.

Try Out a Smoothie

If you’d like to become the sort of person who has a great breakfast every morning but you’re just resolutely not, then never fear! Whenever you’re in need of a little more energy in the morning, make a smoothie. Experiment with different bases, from milk to coconut water to different flavoured juices. Also, try all the different fruits that you could put in there. Combine pineapple, mango and coconut water for a tropical twist, and fall back on the staple of strawberry and banana if you need the smoothie equivalent of a reassuring hug. If you’re feeling wild you could even make a green smoothie with apple, mint and kale. Although be aware that this one might take a little working up to!

Drinking more water is a constant tip for success – if you want better skin, drink more water. If you want healthier nails, drink more water. If you have a headache, drink more water. And if you want to lose weight and get fit, guess what? Drink more water! Not only does it fill you up and make you less hungry but it’s also good for all the different parts of your body. By the time you’re thirty, chances are, you’re already dehydrated. Make sure that you drink your eight glasses of water a day to keep your body in tiptop condition.
